Opportunity: Junior Web Developer & WordPress Support Specialist
Team: Web Development
Reports to: Associate Director, Development
Type & Location: Full-time | Vancouver, BC | In Office
Salary: $50,000–$55,000 CAD per year, depending on experience
About the Role
The Junior Web Developer & WordPress Support Specialist is a web-team role focused primarily on the ongoing support, maintenance, and management of our client websites, with opportunities to contribute to broader web development projects as experience and workload allow.
A substantial and predictable portion of the role is dedicated to supporting a portfolio of approximately 150 client WordPress websites. This includes scheduled maintenance, security updates, hosting and domain management, troubleshooting, content and front-end changes, client support requests, performance work, and recurring hosting and website-management obligations.
This is more than a content administration position. The person in this role will be expected to understand how WordPress websites operate, investigate problems, safely make production changes, test their work, identify when something has gone wrong, and escalate more complex issues appropriately.
The remaining portion of the role supports the development team with junior development work, primarily within WordPress, with opportunities to assist on custom web applications and integrations as needed. This may include front-end and PHP development, bug fixes, testing, data and database tasks, deployments, and general project support.
Depending on the project, the role may also gain exposure to technologies such as Laravel, React, Next.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, APIs, SQL, Docker, Linux, and Microsoft Azure, with development work completed under the guidance and review of more senior developers.
This position is intended for someone early in their development career who already has a useful foundation in web technologies and wants hands-on experience working with real production systems, client websites, and custom applications.
You do not need to know every technology we use on day one. We are looking for someone who can learn quickly, troubleshoot methodically, follow established processes, communicate clearly, and gradually take ownership of more complex technical work.
Our Clients & Work
Our Web Development team supports a broad mix of organizations, primarily in Vancouver and British Columbia, as well as clients across Canada and internationally.
Our clients include:
- Small and mid-sized businesses
- Larger commercial organizations
- Charities and non-profit organizations
- Associations and member-based organizations
- Public-sector and government organizations
- Healthcare-adjacent charities, non-profits, and organizations
The work is similarly varied. Our team supports traditional business websites, high-traffic WordPress sites, WooCommerce and Shopify e-commerce, campaign and marketing websites, custom web applications, APIs and third-party integrations, internal business systems, and cloud-hosted applications.
Because we work with many different clients and systems, the role requires someone comfortable moving between different websites, technologies, priorities, and types of technical problems throughout the week.
Core Responsibilities
WordPress Support & Website Management
- Act as a key resource for monitoring, triaging, and responding to Webdesk support tickets.
- Help take day-to-day ownership of recurring website maintenance, hosting, and management obligations across approximately 150 client WordPress websites.
- Maintain WordPress core, plugins, and themes using established staging, backup, testing, and rollback procedures.
- Troubleshoot WordPress issues including:
- Plugin and theme conflicts
- PHP and application errors
- HTTP 500 errors
- Broken layouts or functionality
- Forms and email delivery
- Redirects
- Caching and CDN issues
- Performance problems
- Integrations and APIs
- Configuration issues
- Monitor and respond to uptime, security, vulnerability, broken-link, performance, mail, and application alerts where applicable.
- Assist with website cleanup, technical SEO issues, site-speed improvements, and general website health.
- Maintain accurate support-ticket notes and documentation of changes, testing, findings, and follow-up work.
Hosting, Domains & Website Operations
Our managed WordPress websites are hosted primarily on Pressable and Kinsta, alongside other hosting and cloud environments when required.
Responsibilities may include:
- Working with development, staging, and production environments.
- Managing backups and understanding available restore and rollback options.
- Migrating websites between hosting environments with minimal downtime.
- Performing post-migration cleanup and validation.
- Managing SSL certificates.
- Configuring website-related DNS records, including A, CNAME, TXT, and verification records.
- Working with Cloudflare for DNS, CDN, caching, redirects, and security functionality.
- Managing caching and CDN configuration.
- Configuring user roles and access.
- Setting up forms, analytics, integrations, and other common website services.
- Assisting with website launches and production cutovers.
- Troubleshooting Linux-based hosting environments where required.
Security, Maintenance & Post-Update Testing
Website maintenance is treated as a controlled technical change rather than simply installing available updates.
The role includes:
- Reviewing available WordPress core, plugin, and theme updates.
- Reviewing vulnerability and security alerts and assisting with appropriate patching.
- Confirming backups and rollback options before potentially disruptive work.
- Testing major or higher-risk updates in staging before production deployment.
- Applying urgent security patches when required while following established change and testing procedures.
- Establishing a basic pre-change functional baseline when appropriate.
- Completing post-update smoke and functional testing.
Testing may include:
- Homepage and key page functionality
- Desktop and mobile navigation
- Forms and email delivery
- Search
- User login and password-reset functionality
- E-commerce functionality
- Cart and checkout
- Payment gateway loading
- Account registration
- Third-party integrations
- Analytics and tracking
- Consent tools
- Redirects
- Caching
- Browser console errors
- PHP and server logs
The role also assists with technical and SEO safety checks following updates or deployments, including checking indexing settings, robots.txt, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, redirects, HTTP status codes, analytics, and other functionality that could be affected by a change.
If an update introduces a regression, the expectation is to identify the issue, correct or roll back the change where appropriate, document the findings, and escalate to a more senior developer when necessary.
Client Support & Content Updates
- Respond to website support requests through our ticketing system.
- Provide clients with clear and professional updates regarding status and progress.
- Gather content, requirements, approvals, and assets needed to complete requests.
- Reproduce reported problems and document useful troubleshooting information.

- Build simple campaign and landing pages from supplied designs or requirements.
- Make responsive adjustments across screen sizes.

- Improve website performance without unnecessarily changing the intended design or functionality.
Junior Development
Development work will vary based on current projects and the employee’s experience.
Responsibilities may include:
- Implementing front-end changes using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
- Building responsive interfaces from designs or existing design systems.
- Performing PHP development and troubleshooting.
- Working with WordPress themes, child themes, templates, hooks, filters, and custom plugins.
- Assisting with custom WordPress development and integrations.
- Investigating and resolving appropriately scoped application bugs.
- Supporting existing custom web applications.
- Working with APIs and third-party integrations.
- Assisting with data imports, exports, transformations, and other data-related tasks.
- Writing and troubleshooting basic SQL queries.
- Reviewing application, PHP, web-server, and platform logs.
- Assisting with QA and browser/device testing.
- Participating in deployments and post-release testing.
- Working within existing Laravel applications where appropriate.
- Assisting with React, Next.js, TypeScript, or other front-end application projects where appropriate.
- Supporting Dockerized or cloud-hosted development environments.
- Assisting with Microsoft Azure application hosting and deployments.
- Participating in Git-based development workflows and code review.
- Supporting internal tooling, automation, documentation, and technical-debt cleanup.
Junior development work is reviewed by more senior developers. The expectation is not that the employee independently architects complex applications, but that they can increasingly take a well-defined task through investigation, implementation, testing, review, deployment, and follow-up.
